Hand Care
Our hand and upper extremity program provides services to both adults and children with conditions resulting from traumatic injury, disease, or cumulative trauma conditions. Treatment consists of techniques geared toward increasing motion, strength and coordination in the arm and hand as well as decreasing swelling, pain and stiffness associated with injury. Following a thorough evaluation, our hand specialist and the patient work together to reach the goal of maximizing functional use of the hand and upper extremity for return to work and daily living activities.

Orthotics
Patients receive a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation to determine if they will benefit from an orthotic device. Many orthopedic problems can be the result of biomechanical problems: plantar fasciitis / heel spurs, neuroma, bunions, patellofemoral syndrome, low back pain, ACL tear and more.
Custom vs Accommodative Orthotics
A custom orthotic is designed from a cast taken from the patient's foot. It is designed to allow the foot to function at or around its neutral position.
An accommodative orthotic is not taken from a specific mold, but instead provides some biomechanical assistance by helping the foot compensate better for the biomechanical problem.
Based on the patient's condition and on the information obtained from the physical exam, we determine which patients will need custom or accommodative orthotics.

Understanding the orthopedic condition and how the biomechanical problem affects it
In addition to evaluating the patient and providing them with the appropriate orthotic device, we can instruct them in the proper exercises for their problem. Orthotic devices are useful and necessary to address the biomechanical aspect of the problem, however, are not the answer for the whole problem. Having a good understanding of how the biomechanical problems affect joint function and soft tissue function around the joint is critical.
Geriatric
We specialize in geriatric rehabilitation for our patients. This program consists of understanding the initial injury or ailment, explaining the various therapeutic applications, evaluating the severity of injury or ailment and customizing a specific program for your needs. This program will take into consideration age, level of function, flexibility and other factors.

Pregnancy Related Disorders
A number of physiological changes occur during pregnancy which affect the musculoskeletal system and increase the risk of orthopedic injuries, including lower back pain, neck pain, weak or aching muscles and joints, and a tingling or weakness of the arms and legs. After delivery, weak abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, as well as painful scars resulting from a C-section, are common. Our services include a musculoskeletal evaluation, mobilization techniques for affected joints and soft tissue, and instruction in exercises to correct problems.
Easing Pelvic Pain
A number of conditions may cause pain of the female pelvis, and greatly affect her body’s mobility and functions, and consequently her relationships and quality of life. Our physical therapists help to identify if a musculoskeletal problem is contributing to the pain. Treatment includes pain-relieving measures, internal soft tissue mobilization, pelvic floor exercises, relaxation training, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, and therapeutic exercises.
Mastectomy Recovery
Many patients who have has mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, and/or radiation therapy experience such secondary symptoms as swelling of the arm on the affected side, shoulder and neck pain, shoulder weakness, decreased shoulder mobility, and abnormal sensations of the arm pit. Physical therapy offers treatment to restore function of the arm, reduce swelling with lymph drainage techniques, normalize joint mobility, and establish neuromuscular control of the shoulder.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence can be temporary when caused by infection, illness, medication side effects or immobility. Longer lasting incontinence can be caused by weakness of the pelvic floor, hormonal changes or neurological conditions.
Offered in a relaxed and private environment, our program is administered by a physical therapist, and has no risk and no side effects. Patients are encouraged to try our programs before having surgery, or to enhance surgical effectiveness. Our program includes a thorough screening/history and evaluation by a physical therapist. An individualized plan of care will be discussed, that may include physical therapy, bladder training, health conditioning, education, home programs, pelvic floor muscle strengthening, posture re-training, and a long-term follow-up plan

Vestibular Program
The vestibular system is a complex organization of membranous portions of the inner ear. Damage to the vestibular system may result in dizziness, vertigo, nausea and balance disorders. It can be extremely debilitating, but physical therapy can be a valuable treatment for patients. Therapists at Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists are trained to work with patients that have vestibular disorders. Patients will no longer have to suffer with symptoms, and are able to achieve a functional lifestyle upon completion of vestibular rehabilitation.
