Shawn Grant PT, MS, OCS, Cert. MDT
Wixom Walled Lake Center Canton Center, Milan Center
Shawn is an accomplished physical therapist specializing in sports and orthopedic rehabilitation. He has been with Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists since 2004 acting as clinic director for the Wixom and Canton centers. Shawn is certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and has been a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist since 2006. He is now completing a fellowship in applied functional science, which is an innovative and dynamic approach to the use of functional movements. These advanced training opportunities and specializations have enhanced his ability to effectively diagnose orthopedic injuries and design programs specific to the individual needs of the patient. Shawn has a particular interest in the rehabilitation of the throwing athlete, foot and ankle biomechanics, orthotic fabrication, and post tendon/ligament reconstruction. He frequently lectures to local physician groups, physical therapy and athletic training staff, case managers, and community groups on various orthopedic topics.
Shawn graduated from Alma College where he was a two sport athlete and later completed his physical therapy degree from the University of Indianapolis. He has been married to his wife for 12 years and has three very active boys who share their passion for sports and fitness.
Jill Munoz MPT
Livonia and Livonia East Centers
Jill Munoz, MPT, has been a physical therapist with Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists since 2001, and Director of Livonia West Center since 2004 and Livonia East Center since 2006.
She graduated from Wayne State University in 1998 with her bachelors in Biology and in 2001 with her Masters in physical therapy. She has taken numerous accelerated courses in Mackenzie, orthopedics and sports medicine along with being certified in vestibular rehabilitation. She continues to stay abreast with the most updated information and techniques by attending courses, lecturing at Wayne State and performing peer journal reviews.
She has become a commonplace for patients in the Livonia area for sports medicine and orthopedics in the last ten years and has become a staple in the Livonia Community treating thousands of patients ranging from weekend warriors, high school and college athletes to those suffering with chronic pain. She lectures at numerous local area recreation centers on health and fitness as well as educating colleagues on treatment approaches.
Jill is an avid runner, fitness coach and soccer player for over 20 years. She is involved in many local area charities and volunteers in the local community.
Benjamin Wallis PT, MS, Cert. MDT
Novi and Northville Centers
Benjamin Wallis received his Masters of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Central Michigan University May 2000 and his Bachelors of Science degree from CMU May 1997. He has been a team-member of Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists since August 2000. He is certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment through the McKenzie Institute making him a preferred provider for spine and extremity treatment.
Ben has attended numerous continuing educational conferences on orthopedic and sports related injuries. He has clinical interests in all orthopedic cases with specialty interests in knee and shoulder rehabilitation, as well complicated spine. He has a comprehensive treatment approach that relies heavily on patient education, clinical experience, and aggressive exercise programs. He is skilled in osteopathic manual therapy, joint mobilization techniques, myofascial release, strain/counter-strain, and muscle energy treatments.
Ben is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA), and the McKenzie Institute USA. He is also a member of the Sports Medicine and the Orthopedic sections of the APTA. Ben provides direct patient care at the Novi location and is responsible for Directing care at both the Novi and Northville locations. Additionally, he overseas the Athletic Medicine outreach programs at both Catholic Central and Novi High Schools. Ben is also an active member of the Northville Kiwanis Club.
Phillip Schuyten DPT
White Lake-Waterford Center
Phillip Schuyten is the site director of the White Lake/Waterford center. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and has practiced with Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists his entire career. Prior to graduate school he attended Grand Valley State University where he attained his B.S. in Health Science. Phil volunteers his time with the Walled Lake Northern High School athletic teams providing coverage at football games and injury clinic at the school for athletes and teachers. In 2011, he completed Part A of McKenzie diagnosis and treatment and uses this in practice on a regular basis. In 2013, he completed part 1 of the Titleist Performance Institute's golf program. He is currently working his way through promoting current research in health care with an emphasis on orthopedics. Phil has presented lectures to physicians at different hospitals in the area on injury prevention and cutting-edge treatment. He has recently launched a new golf fitness program with PPTS called Fit 2 Golf or F2G. He also works with US Figure Skating as a consultant. He has contributed to the Over training and Recovery Focus Group at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Phil spent the last 6 years providing judging and backstage assistance and sponsorship for the Miss Washtenaw Pageant and Outstanding Teen Pageant that takes place in Chelsea, MI every fall. Phil specializes in dance medicine, golf and injury prevention, orthopedics, and athletic medicine.
Melissa Matthews, PT, DPT
Melissa graduated from Central Michigan University School of Physical Therapy in 2006 with her Masters and Doctorate degrees. Melissa received her undergraduate degree in Health Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation from Central Michigan University. After graduating with her degrees in Physical Therapy, Melissa moved to Tampa, Florida where she practiced for 5 years in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine before returning to Michigan.
Melissa’s prior experience in the hospital and rehab settings have helped influence her current approach to outpatient orthopedic physical therapy. Melissa applies a variety of manual therapy techniques, individualized exercise programs and patient education in her patients’ treatments. Melissa believes that patients’ understanding of their condition(s) will help them in their recovery process. Melissa also believes in continuing to further her knowledge of Physical Therapy throughout her entire career. She has attended numerous continuing education courses on a variety of Orthopedic and Sports topics including Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy of the spine and extremities, Vestibular Rehabilitation and Selective Functional Movement Assessment & Treatment. Melissa completed the course offered through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to become a Credentialed Clinical Instructor in December 2008. Melissa is also an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) and the Sports Section of the APTA.
Melissa’s interest in Physical Therapy started in high school with her involvement in both track and cheerleading. She has been able to experience Physical Therapy both as the patient and as the therapist. Melissa’s interests outside of the clinic include running, reading and spending time with her friends and family.
Nicole Ramos PT, DPT, Cert. MDT
Nicole Ramos, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. She is originally from Michigan and returned home after living in Boston for 4 years. Nicole graduated from Michigan State University in 2004 with a Bachelors of Science with a concentration in genetics.
She began working at our Commerce Center in October 2010. Nicole has attended numerous continuing educational conferences on orthopedic and sports related injuries. Her most recent courses have focused on treatment of the shoulder, Mulligan techniques, osteopathic manual therapy, joint mobilization techniques, vestibular rehabilitation, sports medicine/injuries and McKenzie approach (mechanical diagnosis therapy). She is certified in Mechanical Diagnosis Therapy (MDT), which is more widely known as the McKenzie method. She utilizes her growing knowledge in new techniques to better assist her patient’s in the most up-to-date approaches backed by clinical evidence and research. Her next educational ventures include progressing her knowledge in functional movement analysis (Gary Gray), obtaining her orthopedic clinic specialist certification(OCS) and becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS).
Nicole is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Orthopedic section of the APTA, and the Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA). In her leisure time she enjoys running and trains for events such as Fight For Air Climb, Detroit half marathon and other local races. She enjoys reading, traveling, tennis, volleyball, and golf. She is studying to become fluent in Portuguese and will happily share stories about adventures in Brazil.

Sterling Heights Center
Todd Thurman PT, DPT has been a physical therapist with Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists since 2013, and became the director of the Sterling Heights clinic in December 2014.
He graduated from Michigan State University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology through the Lyman Briggs college of Natural Sciences. He earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Central Michigan University in 2013. He continues to take continuing education courses to improve his knowledge base in a variety of areas. He has been trained in the McKenzie techniques of Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT) for back and neck injuries and is planning on continuing his education in this field. He has also taken several continuing education courses to progress his knowledge in the treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine conditions.
He feels that one of the most important aspects of physical therapy treatment is to educate each patient so that they fully understand their condition in order to reach the most efficient and complete recovery possible. He has experience working with patients of all ages and demographics, and is able to explain complex injuries in a manner that is easy to understand.
Todd's interest in physical therapy started in high school with his involvement in sports such as football, soccer, and lacrosse. He had multiple injuries throughout high school and college athletics which required physical therapy treatment, sparking his interest in the field.
Evangelos "Ari" Drainas, PT, Cert. MDT
Ari started his Physical Therapy adventure in Greece at the Technological Institute of Lamia (Sept. 2003-June 2008), making a stop in Linkoping University Sweden (Feb 2007-June 2008) and finishing his journey at Wayne State University in order to complete the requirements for a US master's degree (Jan 2011). Additionally, Ari has had several continuing education courses, including certification in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment which he became certified in
Ari has a wide range of expertise and knowledge to better serve a vast variety of conditions including acute, neuro and chronic care, sports medicine, and pediatric rehabilitation.
Ari's true passion is for sport and orthopedic rehab. With years of experience in his related field, continuing education courses and with many affiliations with local High school teams and clubs, he has a great understanding to treat from simple to complex athletic and orthopedic conditions that can cause daily stress. “I'm here to solve and abolish every day aches and pains or rehabilitate more complex injuries or surgeries.”
